Module 1: Introduction to Ketogenic Diet Therapies

This module gives you an overview of ketogenic diet therapy, providing an introduction to:

  • the types of ketogenic diets

  • how the diet might work

  • the various conditions we use the ketogenic diet as a treatment for

  • evidence supporting the use of KD therapy

  • positive benefits of KD therapy

  • potential side effects of KD therapy

Module 2: A Typical Day on a Ketogenic Diet

In this module, we will share some insights into what a typical day on a keto diet might look like. We discuss some of the practicalities of a keto diet and some keto meal ideas to give you some context at this early stage of what the diet entails. Later sessions will expand further on keto-friendly changes you can make to prepare for KD and low carbohydrate swaps.

Module 3: Expectations and The Evolving Keto Mindset

This module encourages you to take some time to think about what your expectations of ketogenic diet therapy are.

By the end of the module you will have considered what you would like to see change in order for KD to be deemed a success. This might be for you as an individual, your child or your wider family.

You will also gain some insights into how a group of parents felt in the early months of KD and some top tips to support you in managing your mindset.

If your child is going on KD, we share some resources to support your conversations with them.

Module 4: Preparing Your Kitchen for KD and General Food Knowledge

This module starts with some top tips for prepping your kitchen for keto that can help to make keto cooking as efficient as possible.

You will be able to identify what foods contain carbohydrates, fat and protein. You may be surprised at some of the foods and drinks where carbohydrate pops up!

This will prepare you for module 5 where we launch into keto-friendly swaps, recipes, new food trials and sample shopping lists.

Module 5: Keto Friendly Changes and Low Carbohydrate Swaps

This module is all about taking positive steps toward a ketogenic diet, making keto-friendly changes and planning your shopping lists. The suggested changes are suitable for the whole family, so get everyone on board to support you or your child.

It will feel very practical so we hope you enjoy it!

We will share lots of ideas for keto-friendly changes you can make right now to help smooth the transition onto full KD later.

Making these changes will help to build your confidence that KD will be manageable! We will provide you with sample shopping lists to get you started.

Last but not least, we will share a keto muffin and keto sweets recipe (fat bombs!) so you can start some keto baking!

Module 6: Specialist Medical Nutrition Products

Specialist ketogenic products including tube feeds, supplemental milkshakes, desserts and foods are available. These are generally high in fat and very low or zero carbohydrate so can be helpful as part of your ketogenic diet.

The range and availability will vary between countries but your dietitian can guide you on what is available locally and whether if they would be suitable as part of your KD prescription.

By the end of this module, you will understand how we can use these products on a ketogenic diet and most importantly for now - how you or your child can trial these products if you have received samples from your dietitian.

Module 7: Resources and Support

This short module outlines the wealth of support available online from key charities like Matthew's Friends, The Daisy Garland and The Charlie Foundation. Some good book titles are also shared.

Module 8: Testing Ketones/Blood Glucose and Managing Abnormal Results

This module explains:

  • what ketones and blood glucose are

  • how we test ketones and blood glucose

  • how to treat abnormal levels.

This is a slightly heavier and more technical module than others, so if you're feeling tired or have limited time just now, then I'd advise you to wait and return to it at a later date.

Module 9: Next Steps - Working with The Keto Dietitian
